The UNC Charlotte Orchestra welcomes Assistant Professor of Voice Audrey Babcock, mezzo-soprano, and special guest violinist Mykylah Myers for a performance of Intonations: Songs from the Violins of Hope. Presented in partnership with Queens University of Charlotte and Central Piedmont Community College, the ensemble will include students from those institutions as well as Charlotte Symphony Youth Orchestra violinist David Karpov. Dr. Alan Yamamoto conducts.
Composed by Jake Heggie with a libretto by Gene Scheer, the song cycle Intonations: Songs from the Violins of Hope draws from Professor of Musicology Jay Grymes’s book, Violins of Hope: Instruments of Hope and Liberation in Mankind’s Darkest Hour, which tells the stories of violins with Holocaust histories, restored by Israeli violinmaker Amnon Weinstein. In April 2012, UNC Charlotte and the Charlotte community presented the North American premiere of the Violins of Hope, bringing 18 instruments from Israel for a series of performances, lectures, and exhibitions.
